Game Description

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara is a beat 'em up game released for arcade machines, developed by Capcom as a sequel to "Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom". It is based on the fictional world of Dungeons & Dragons, full of dragons, magic, and brave warriors, offering players exciting adventures, epic battles, and the opportunity to explore a fantasy world.

Game Plot

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara is the sequel to the game "Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom"¹. Two years after the heroes defeated the Arch Lich Deimos, a new threat arises: the powerful sorceress Synn, who plans to conquer the Republic of Darokin.

Gameplay

Players choose from several available characters, each with unique abilities and skills. During their journey through different locations, players fight hordes of enemies, collect treasures, gain experience, and use magic and weapons to survive numerous encounters.

The game combines side-scrolling beat 'em up gameplay with some aspects of role-playing games. Shadow over Mystara has many gameplay mechanics that are not common in arcade games, such as finding and equipping new gear and learning new spells as players gain experience. Players can choose from a wide variety of weapons and armor, although this choice is limited by the character class they choose. The game also features many magical and hidden items, many of which are completely unknown to the average player. This, along with the addition of multiple endings and branching paths in the plot, gives the game a high replayability value and has contributed to its cult status among genre fans.

In Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara, there are four original characters from the predecessor, "Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom" (Cleric, Dwarf, Elf, and Fighter), and Shadow of Mystara adds Thief and Wizard as player character options. Additionally, by including two separate versions of each character's sprite set, the game allows two players to choose the same character (in Tower of Doom, each character could only be chosen once), effectively giving the game 12 "different" characters to choose from. The two Clerics and two Wizards also have subtle differences in their spellbooks.
