Game description
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is a fighting game created by Capcom. It's a legendary arcade game that revolutionized the fighting game genre in the 90s. Players must master key combinations to perform powerful special attacks, such as the legendary "Hadoken" or "Shoryuken".
Players choose one of several available warriors and compete in a tournament of street fights worldwide. Each character has their own unique abilities, special moves, and fighting style. The goal is to defeat all opponents, including the powerful boss, M. Bison, and become the tournament champion.
Players
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior introduced a multitude of characters to fighting games, with different fighting styles and backgrounds. Each of the warriors has their own story and motivation for participating in the tournament.
Players could choose one of eight warriors from around the world (Japanese martial arts masters Ryu and Ken from the previous installment, Japanese sumo wrestler E. Honda, Chinese martial arts master Chun-Li, Brazilian monster Blanka, Russian professional wrestler Zangief, American former special forces operator Guile, and Indian yoga master Dhalsim).
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior offers diverse locations for fights, including urban districts, Japanese temples, and Chinese rooftops.
Successes
The game was so popular that it received numerous updates in the 90s starting from Street Fighter II': Champion Edition and ending with Street Fighter II: Turbo. The game was also ported to home consoles such as SNES.
The success of the game also led to the creation of both a Japanese animated film (which later had its own game) and an American live-action film (very poorly received), two animated TV series (Japanese Street Fighter II V and American Street Fighter), and a pinball adaptation created by Gottlieb.
Over 200,000 arcade game machines and 15 million software units were sold worldwide in all versions of Street Fighter II, generating estimated revenues of $10 billion, making it one of the three most profitable video games of all time as of 2017 and the best-selling fighting game until 2019. Over 6.3 million SNES cartridges of Street Fighter II were sold, making it Capcom's best-selling single game for the next two decades, their best-selling game on a single platform, and the best-selling third-party game on the SNES.
