Game Description

Shantae is an extraordinary platformer released on the Game Boy Color console. The game was developed by WayForward Technologies and quickly gained cult status, especially among retro game fans.

Players take on the role of Shantae, a half-genie who must save her magical town, Scuttle Town, from an evil pirate named Risky Boots. Throughout her adventure, Shantae must defeat numerous enemy characters, collect treasures, develop her skills, and use her characteristic dance, which transforms her into animals and helps her solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Shantae's primary attack is using her hair as a whip.

Magical Abilities

In Shantae, there are five towns, each with different areas full of enemies and obstacles between them. To progress through the game, Shantae must seek out various characters who will open dungeons, and in each dungeon, a genie guardian will teach Shantae a new dance. With these dances, Shantae can transform into different animals, including a monkey that can climb walls, an elephant that can destroy objects like boulders and tree stumps, a spider that can climb on webs in the background, and a harpy that can fly through the air. Shantae must use these abilities to reach new areas or find hidden items.

Day and Night

The game has a day and night cycle, with enemies becoming stronger at night. During the night, players can collect hidden fireflies, and there is a reward for collecting them all. Other collectible creatures are Warp Squids, which are hidden in dungeons and can be given to larger mother squids in each town in exchange for the ability to teleport there instantly.

Shantae is a game that attracted attention not only for its gameplay but also for the main character, who became an icon of video game culture. Thanks to her distinctive appearance and personality, Shantae has gained many fans worldwide.

Financial Disappointment

The first Shantae game received very positive reviews but was a financial disappointment. Poor sales are attributed to its late release on the Game Boy Color, which by that time had been replaced by the Game Boy Advance.
