The time of day changes to day or night each time Wario exits a stage. Some stages change depending on the time of day; some enemies may be replaced with others, or different paths may open. Initially, Wario does not control time, but he gains this ability when he finds a certain treasure.

The music box world is divided into four distinct areas: East, West, North, and South, each containing several individual stages. Each stage contains four treasures, each of which is locked in a colorful treasure chest that can only be opened with the corresponding key. When Wario finds a new treasure, he is teleported back to the music box.
