Game Description

Pokémon Yellow is the third game in the first generation of the Pokémon series and combines two previous titles: Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. The game was released on the Game Boy and Game Boy Color handheld consoles and became extremely popular due to its innovations compared to earlier installments. The biggest difference you'll notice if you've played Pokémon Blue or Red is that you can only get Pikachu as your starting Pokémon. Throughout the game, the player is able to obtain Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle in various locations, as Pikachu takes their place as the Starter Pokémon.

In the game, you play as a Pokémon trainer who embarks on a journey through the world of Pokémon to become the Pokémon League Champion. Your goal is to catch and train a variety of Pokémon, compete with other trainers, and ultimately challenge the Elite Four and the Champion of the League. Another goal is to complete the Pokédex, the in-game encyclopedia, by obtaining all 151 available Pokémon.

An unusual feature of Pokémon Yellow is that the player is always accompanied by Pikachu, known from the iconic Pokémon animated series. Pikachu is visible on the screen and can make sounds, and its relationship with the player grows stronger as the game progresses.

The game offers a variety of Pokémon, each with unique abilities and types. Your task is to collect them all and build a diverse team of Pokémon that will help you defeat tougher opponents.

In Pokémon Yellow, you'll encounter many iconic characters from the series, such as Brock, Misty, Team Rocket, and of course, Professor Oak. The game retains many gameplay elements known from classic RPGs, such as exploration, turn-based battles, and gaining experience.

Trivia

The game was available on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console between the 20th anniversary of Pokémon on February 27, 2016, and the closure of the 3DS Nintendo eShop on March 27, 2023.

Pokémon Yellow is the only game where Pikachu does not evolve. The only way to make it evolve is to trade it to another version, evolve it, and then trade it back to Yellow.

Remake

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, were released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch in November 2018, commemorating the 20th anniversary of Yellow in Japan.
