Wrecking Crew '98 (SNES)
Game Description
Wrecking Crew '98 is a sequel to the classic game Wrecking Crew, released on Super Famicom in 1998 exclusively in Japan. The game is a hybrid of puzzle and action genres, offering new challenges, characters, and game modes that expand upon the concept of the original production.
The game takes a more competitive approach, featuring puzzle elements similar to games like Tetris and Puyo Puyo, such as the ability to bury opponents under panels and create chain reactions. The game also includes a direct port of the NES version. Wrecking Crew '98 was never released outside of Japan due to the discontinuation of SNES game sales by Nintendo's international divisions the previous year, 1997. The game was later released in Japan for the Wii U Virtual Console on September 28, 2016.
Plot
The game's plot revolves around Mario, who upon returning from a journey discovers that Bowser is conducting a campaign to build skyscrapers in the Mushroom Kingdom, depriving local plants of sunlight. Unable to tolerate this, he retrieves a powerful blue hammer from a chest in his house and sets out on a mission to destroy the buildings. Mario's old adversary, Foreman Spike, along with several other enemies from the original game, attempts to stop him.
Gameplay
The gameplay in Wrecking Crew '98 involves eliminating panels on your field by destroying them with a hammer or by arranging three or more panels of the same color vertically or horizontally. Players can arrange their panels accordingly using handles located in the corner¹. Over time, brick blocks will start to fall onto the field. The longer the match goes on, the shorter the time between falling blocks. If you arrange four or more panels, an obstacle or trap will be sent to the opponent's side, depending on the color of the panels. If more than one set of panels is removed in succession, attacks on the opponent's side will be stronger. Players can also summon additional rows of panels to their side when needed. When the field is clear of panels, metal plates, and enemies, a "Nice!" message will appear, and the player will receive a mushroom. The mushroom acts as an attack multiplier, increasing the strength of the next combo towards the enemy. The opponent can only be defeated when the number of panels in a column exceeds the line at the top of the screen. If panels are not removed within 3 seconds, the opponent will lose, and the player will be declared the winner.
