Donkey Kong 64

Game Description

Donkey Kong 64 is a platform game that immerses players in the extraordinary world of Donkey Kong in full 3D graphics. The game is known for its expansive levels, a huge number of tasks to complete, and various playable characters.

Players take on the role of Donkey Kong, who must rescue his family, Diddy Kong, Tiny Kong, Lanky Kong, and Chunky Kong, from the evil King K. Rool. Each character has unique abilities necessary for solving puzzles and uncovering secrets across different levels of the game.

The gameplay involves exploring colorful and expansive levels, collecting bananas, defeating enemies, and solving challenging puzzles. The game offers plenty of action, from explosions and jumps to boss battles. Donkey Kong 64 is also renowned for its numerous items and weapons to find, such as peanut pistols and coconut cannons.

Rare began work on Donkey Kong 64 in 1997, after completing Donkey Kong Country 3 (1996). Initially intended to be a 2.5D platformer similar to Country, it evolved into a more open-ended game using the engine from Rare's Banjo-Kazooie (1998). A team of 16 people, including many who had worked on Banjo-Kazooie, completed the game in 1999.

Donkey Kong 64 was the first game to require the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak add-on, which added memory resources to the console. The game received critical acclaim for its graphics, level design, character models, multiplayer mode, and scenery, although criticism was directed at the camera work and emphasis on item collecting and backtracking. Some critics viewed its gameplay and visual similarities to Banjo-Kazooie as negatives.

Donkey Kong 64 was Rare's final Donkey Kong game before the studio was acquired by Microsoft in 2002 and the last major Donkey Kong game until the release of "Jungle Beat" in 2004. The game was re-released on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2015.
