Super Smash Bros. online

Game Description

Super Smash Bros. is a unique fighting game that redefined the genre by combining elements of fighting and platforming. Released on the Nintendo 64 console, it initiated a series where characters from various Nintendo games compete on interactive arenas. The game allows players to embody characters from different Nintendo games, such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Metroid, F-Zero, Mother, Kirby, and Pokémon. Known for its innovative approach to the fighting genre, the game offers not only battles but also dynamic and fun gameplay for single players and multiplayer modes.

Gameplay

The gameplay differs from typical fighting games - instead of emptying the opponent's life bar, players try to knock opponents off the screen. Each player has a damage meter, represented by percentages, which increases as they take damage and can reach a maximum of 999%. As this percentage increases, the character gets pushed farther by attacks. To eliminate an opponent (KO), a player must send that character flying off the arena edge.

Character List

  • Mario: He's a perfect character for beginners. He's balanced in every way, which makes sense since he's Nintendo's mascot.
  • Donkey Kong: He's based on his appearance from Rare's Donkey Kong games. He wears a red tie with his logo and is one of the strongest characters in the game, but also one of the slowest.
  • Link: He's probably the most weaponized character with both long-range and short-range attack options, with two projectiles, his long Master Sword, and Hookshot.
  • Samus: She's a heavy yet floaty character with decent recovery. However, she also has slow moves with a lot of end lag, lacking a quick and easy KO move.
  • Yoshi: He's surprisingly heavy (the third heaviest character in Smash 64) yet relatively fast, having the fastest air speed in the game, with moderately fast run speed and walk speed.
  • Kirby: He's a small, light, and somewhat floaty character. He's relatively hard to combo horizontally and offstage, though he's susceptible to juggles and many vertical KO techniques (though he's not too difficult to KO horizontally).
  • Fox McCloud: He's a nimble and fast character. His neutral special move is Blaster, which sends out a single powerful energy beam at his opponents.
  • Pikachu: Pikachu is a small, very fast character with quick moves, great recovery, great KO, a projectile, disjointed hitboxes, great combo and edgeguarding abilities, and an incredibly powerful back throw.
  • Luigi: Luigi appears in Super Smash Bros. as one of the four unlockable characters. He's a Mario clone, retaining most of his moves and animations, though differing in attributes.

Success

Super Smash Bros. received mostly positive reviews upon its release. It was a commercial success, selling over five million copies worldwide by 2001, with 2.93 million sold in the United States and 1.97 million sold in Japan. The game received the Editors' Choice award from IGN for "Best Fighting Game" and became a Nintendo 64 Player's Choice title.

The game spawned sequels for each subsequent Nintendo console, starting with Super Smash Bros. Melee, released on the GameCube in 2001.

Game Features

  • Character Diversity: The game offers a wide selection of characters from various Nintendo games, each with unique abilities and attacks.
  • Interactive Arenas: Each arena has its own interactive elements, adding dynamism and strategy to battles.
  • Game Modes: It offers both single-player battles and adventure modes, as well as multiplayer modes, providing players with a wide range of experiences.
  • Dynamics and Fun: The gameplay is dynamic and provides plenty of fun for both veteran players and newcomers.
