The New Tetris online

Game Description

The New Tetris is a classic skill game, being a new installment of the iconic Tetris series, released on the Nintendo 64 console. The game retains the basic concept of Tetris, which involves arranging falling blocks in such a way as to create full lines, which then disappear. Unlike previous versions, The New Tetris introduces new elements such as different game modes, different block schemes, and graphic and sound elements.

Gameplay

The player's task is to arrange falling blocks in such a way as to create full lines that will be removed from the board. In The New Tetris, a new mechanic has been introduced where the player can arrange blocks to create shapes of four blocks, which when completed form larger blocks with atypical shapes. The game offers various game modes, including the classic mode, puzzle mode, as well as the ability to play in multiplayer mode.

The New Tetris also offers a multiplayer mode for up to four players and an ethnically themed soundtrack with electronic music composed by Neil Voss, who also composed the award-winning music for Tetrisphere.

New Features

The game carries the word "New" in the title for a reason, as it includes many changes compared to previous versions. The novelty is the thematic backgrounds available to choose from, such as finks, Pantheon, St. Basil's Cathedral, Mayan temple, and others.

Changes Compared to Old Tetris

Several key differences in gameplay have been introduced in the game compared to the original Tetris. Firstly, in addition to clearing lines, large 4x4 squares can be created from four pieces, to form "blocks"¹. When a block is created, it becomes solid gold or silver, depending on the composition of the block: a block built from pieces of the same type becomes a gold block or "monoblock", while any other combination becomes a silver block or "multiblock". Blocks can only be built from whole pieces: if any part of a piece has been removed, it cannot be used to build a block. When a line containing pieces of a block is removed, more points are earned.

Secondly, to facilitate block building planning, the game displays three future pieces and has a "storage area" where a spare piece can be stored. If the piece in the storage area is more desirable than the currently falling piece, the player can press the L button to swap the currently falling piece with the stored piece.

Another novelty in The New Tetris is that rotation is much more flexible than in traditional Tetris games, with several light nudges, which players called "wall kicks", before finding a place where the tetromino fits. Some of these compensations move pieces away from walls even "above" other pieces. In fact, the game rewards players for making these seemingly impossible "rotation moves": If a line is removed by making a rotation move, all pieces above or below the rotation move break up into individual blocks and fall down, allowing for multiple lines to be cleared and filling empty spaces in the bottom of the play area.
