B-Wings online

Game Description

B-Wings is a classic shoot 'em up game created by Data East, released on the NES console in 1986. The game stands out with diverse gameplay, rich in weapons and strategies, offering players intense challenges in space.

Plot

Although the plot of B-Wings is relatively simple, it focuses on space battles, putting players in the role of a B-Wing spacecraft pilot. The player is sent to confront fleets of enemy spacecraft, trying to defeat enemies and save the galaxy from destruction.

Gameplay

B-Wings offers classic shoot 'em up gameplay, where players control a spacecraft, traversing space full of enemy ships and obstacles. However, what sets the game apart is the ability to change the type of spacecraft mid-flight. Players can customize their spacecraft's weapons and abilities to better deal with various types of enemies. The game also offers an extensive power-up system, allowing players to increase firepower and defense.

Differences from the arcade original

The game was ported to the Family Computer in 1986, but many changes were made in improvements, sound effects, enemy attack patterns, and enemy appearance, which significantly differs from the arcade version from 1984. Additional background music was also added, and shooting in series became possible. Several warps and hidden items were also added, as well as an end screen.

B-Wings consists of 45 levels (30 in the Family Computer version). The player controls a robotic airship named FX-1 and collects parts to upgrade weapons (called "wings"). The goal is to progress through the levels and ultimately destroy the enemy bosses called "Gobunasu" at the end of each level.

Weapons can be equipped to the player's ship by collecting power-ups that correspond to certain weapons. Weapons take the form of "wings" that attach to the sides of the ship, and each has different abilities. A weapon can be discarded by pressing the second button before equipping a new one, and it can also be damaged by enemy attacks. Damaged weapons break apart and are automatically discarded. When the player has no weapons, the ship simply fires two small bullets forward.

The game also features an interesting evasive system. We can momentarily lower the flight altitude of the ship. The player then becomes temporarily immune to attacks from air units, but the ship automatically returns to the air after a short time. This also allows for avoiding some enemies.

Game Features

  • Ship Type Change: Players can customize their spacecraft by choosing from various weapons and abilities during gameplay.
  • Enemy Variety: The game presents various types of enemies, requiring diverse strategies and skills from the player.
  • Power-ups: The power-up system allows players to increase firepower, defensive capabilities, and other aspects of their spacecraft.
