Willow online
Game Description
Willow is an action-adventure game created by Capcom, loosely based on the fantasy film of the same title from 1988. Released on the NES console in 1989, the game transports players to a magical world full of adventures, magic, and dangers. Willow tells the story of Willow, the chosen one, who must restore the human form of the kind-hearted sorceress Fin Raziel and destroy the evil sorceress, Bavmorda.
Willow is part of a series of games released within five years of the original The Legend of Zelda, described as "Zelda clones". Other games of this type include Neutopia from Hudson, Golden Axe Warrior from Sega, and Crystalis from SNK. Capcom director Yoshiki Okamoto commented that the game was part of Capcom's broader strategy at the time to attract a wider audience by using recognized characters from other media, as their original characters might be too niche. He mentioned games based on Area 88 and Destiny of an Emperor as part of this strategy.
The music for the game was composed by Harumi Fujita. She said, "I put a lot of energy into the music for Willow. The producer of Willow was the same producer who created Mega Man. He was an extremely talented person and I was thrilled to have the chance to write music for his game, so I gave it my all. I'm not sure how well the game was received, but it was fun."
Shinji Mikami noted that when he joined Capcom in 1990, everyone who was hired by the company received a free copy of the game.
Game Plot
At the beginning of the game, Ethna, a midwife, escapes from Nockmaar Castle with the infant Elora Danan, but Bavmorda's forces and dogs catch up with her. Just before her death, she places Elora Danan on a raft on the river. This is how Willow finds the child and begins his adventure. What if Ethna managed to escape from the Nockmaar dogs? Where was she headed with Elora Danan? The creators at Capcom started with these questions and created this RPG with a new storyline and additional characters. Ethna managed to bring Elora Danan to the safe Towers of the Saints. Just like in the movie, the promised child chose Willow as her guardian, and the High Aldwin from the Nelwyn village received this prophecy. Willow must embark on a journey to fulfill Elora Danan's destiny and defeat the evil queen Bavmorda.
Gameplay
In the game, the player takes on the role of Willow, who must confront evil using swords, shields, spells, and items to defeat enemies. Unlike the movie and arcade game, Willow typically travels alone, encountering only a few other characters briefly. The game features some RPG elements as Willow gains experience and levels up by defeating enemies in real-time combat. Instead of saving the game state on a battery, the game uses a password system to save progress. The game does not have a monetary system, and all items are found in-game. Willow can enter houses and talk to village residents to receive advice, as well as items such as magic and weapons.
