Holy Diver
Description
Holy Diver is an unconventional and demanding platformer in which players take on the role of a hero named Randy, who embarks on a dangerous mission to cleanse the world of dark forces. The game is heavily inspired by Castlevania.
Plot
It is the year 666 for the world of magic, and the Crimson Kingdom is heading for destruction at the hands of the Black Slayer, the Demon King of the Underground Dark Empire. Realizing that his days are numbered, the sixteenth Crimson Emperor, Ronnie IV, decides to entrust his two sons, Randy and Zakka, to his faithful servant, Ozzy. As the forces of the Slayer approach, Ozzy, Randy, and Zakka escape to another dimension, hoping to ultimately restore light to the world. Over the next 17 years, Randy, Zakka, and Ozzy dedicate themselves and train for magical justice, becoming lords of wizards. Meanwhile, the Black Slayer expands his empire, making his interdimensional forces even stronger. To defeat the Black Slayer and his army, Randy must retrieve the Five Crimson Seals of the Emblem. What's worse, Randy must now wage his war against the Black Slayer alone, as Zakka suddenly disappears, and Ozzy dies.
Gameplay Mechanics
The game consists of six stages. After defeating the boss at the end of each level, the player can learn magical spells, such as the lava freezing spell. It is similar to games like Getsu Fūma Den and Castlevania. In fact, one of the stages has sprites and graphics similar to those found in another Konami game - Contra (the final boss is also very similar to one of Contra).
Trivia
The game was developed by the Japanese company Irem, inspired by the 1983 music album Holy Diver by Dio; however, it is unofficial and has no connection to the band. The four main characters are named after musicians Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Zakk Wylde, and Randy Rhoads. Other characters and places in the game are references to rock music such as the Crimson Kingdom and the Black Slayer.
Dark Atmosphere
The game is saturated with dark elements, including a storyline set in a dark world and numerous references to mythology. This makes Holy Diver a unique game, appealing to fans of fantasy and action games.
