Game Description

DOOM is a legend in the world of computer games. The game originally appeared on personal computers, and its transfer to the SNES console proved to be a challenge due to technical limitations, but the creators accomplished the impossible.

Fighting Demons

Player assumes the role of "The Marine" popularly known as Doomguy, the sole survivor in the fight against demons on a research station on Mars. The player's mission is to survive and eliminate hordes of demons that have attacked the station.

Gameplay

DOOM offers intense first-person shooter gameplay. The player explores dark and claustrophobic corridors of the station, trying to survive attacks from demonic enemies. A wide range of weapons is available in the game, from pistols and shotguns to the powerful BFG 9000 known to everyone. There are 10 types of monsters to face, including possessed humans and demons of varying strength, from weaker but ubiquitous Imps and red, floating Cacodemons to bosses who can survive even several hits from the player's strongest weapons.

Graphics and Limitations Compared to PC

The SNES version, despite hardware limitations, retains most of the characteristic graphical elements. The game does not use the Doom engine, but a custom engine called Reality, programmed by Randy Linden. The SNES DOOM version includes 22 levels from the PC version, but the player's display does not occupy the entire screen. Floors and ceilings are not mapped with textures. The game does not have a save system, meaning that each episode must be started from the beginning.

Legacy

DOOM is considered one of the most important games in history, which influenced the development of first-person shooters. The game has received many sequels and adaptations for various platforms, and its influence is still visible in the world of computer games.

Trivia

Doom is the first SNES game with an M rating for mature and one of three so rated (the others being Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, also released by Williams Entertainment, Inc.) The multiplayer mode was available via the XBAND modem for SNES.
