Game Description

E.V.O.: Search for Eden is an extraordinary platformer with RPG elements that takes players into distant prehistoric times, where they embody an evolving organism striving to become the dominant species on Earth. The game was released by Enix in 1993 for the SNES console.

In the game, you start as a microscopic marine organism and must evolve, fighting other creatures and adapting to a changing environment. The game tells the story of life's evolution over more than a billion years, starting on the surface of Gai - the third daughter of the Sun, ruler of the Solar System. Your goal is to earn evolution points, which allow you to develop your body and your organism's abilities. You can modify the appearance of your creature by adding spikes, fins, teeth, horns, and other features that will help you survive in the harsh conditions of the prehistoric world.

The game offers various stages reflecting different geological and historical eras. As you traverse ocean depths, jungles, forests, deserts, and other locations, you encounter diverse forms of life, both hostile and friendly. You must make decisions regarding the evolution of your organism, adapting it to the prevailing conditions.

Evolution

E.V.O.: Search for Eden consists of five historical periods of the planet: life underwater, emergence onto land, prehistory, the ice age, and the beginnings of humanity. In each of these eras, you start as the lowest form of life (e.g., fish, amphibian, or rodent), and then, through feeding and fighting other species of fauna and flora, you earn Evolution Points (EVO.P). With their help, you can change the form of your creature by increasing its size, covering its skin with hard scales, equipping it with stronger jaws or more powerful limbs. Each of these evolutionary sets can then be saved in the so-called Book of Life, so that you can return to it if necessary.

In each era, you have to complete a series of levels full of enemies and platform elements, between which you can move from the map view (even backtracking to previously completed locations). The necessary condition for completing each chapter is to find an anomaly disrupting the course of evolution, and then reach it and deal with it. These bosses in each case pose a significant challenge, so it's worth accumulating points in advance to try out different combinations of body parts and attack types.

E.V.O.: Search for Eden is a unique and fascinating game that allows you to experiment with evolution and discover the history of life on Earth in a dynamic and engaging way.

Reviews

The title received mixed reviews from the gaming press. It was praised for its thematic content and interesting approach to the mechanics of evolution, while criticized for its audiovisual presentation and the tedious process of acquiring points necessary for the evolution of our protege.
