Game Description

Harvest Moon is a unique simulation game that allows players to experience life as a farmer and manage their farm from scratch. The game offers a calm and relaxing gameplay where players must tend to their crops, raise animals, trade, explore, and build relationships with town residents.

Farm Development

In Harvest Moon, players start the game as owners of a small, neglected farm inherited from their grandfather. They must tend to crops, plant seeds, harvest crops, and sell them at the market to earn money. Money can be used to expand the farm, purchase new tools, and improve living conditions.

Animal Husbandry

In Harvest Moon, players can raise various animals such as cows, chickens, and sheep. Taking care of animals involves feeding, maintaining hygiene, and collecting animal products such as milk and eggs. Animal husbandry is an important part of the game, helping players gain additional resources and develop the farm.

Farm Care

In order for vegetables to grow, they must be watered every day; lack of water does not kill the plants, but prevents their growth. Animals in Harvest Moon must be fed once a day to continue producing resources. While the only care for chickens is feeding, cows need to be brushed and milked to keep them healthy. A cow can get sick if not fed for one day, and if not treated, the illness can lead to death. Chickens can die if left outside, where they can be taken by a storm or eaten by wild dogs.

Relationships with Townsfolk

The town is home to several residents with whom players can build relationships. They can befriend, talk to, and help them, leading to interesting interactions and benefits later in the gameplay. After dark, the only activity in town accessible to the player is a bar, where many NPC characters gather to drink and talk.

Seasonal Cycle

Harvest Moon features a seasonal cycle that affects conditions on the farm. Players must adjust their actions to the seasons, taking care of appropriate crops and animals depending on the weather conditions.

Legacy

Harvest Moon has been re-released on several platforms including Satellaview, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch. The success of Harvest Moon led to numerous sequels and spin-offs on multiple platforms. The series was renamed to Story of Seasons outside of Japan due to Natsume holding the rights to the Harvest Moon name.
