Game Description
Mortal Kombat 1 is a 2D fighting game produced by Midway Games and released on the SNES console in 1993. In the game, players engage in one-on-one combat, executing various punches, kicks, and special moves to defeat their opponent. When the opponent loses the second round, the winner can perform a BRUTAL finishing move called "Fatality." Mortal Kombat 1 was also one of the first fighting titles to introduce narrative elements into gameplay. Players could uncover character backstories and motivations by completing the single-player mode.

- Liu Kang - is a Shaolin monk. He is one of the main characters in the Mortal Kombat series and often serves as the main protagonist.
- Scorpion - is the most famous, orange ninja from the Mortal Kombat series. His real name is Hanzo Hasashi, and his signature move is throwing a kunai on a rope.
- Sub-Zero - is the pseudonym of two brothers in the Mortal Kombat series. The elder brother, Bi-Han, was killed by Scorpion, and the younger brother, Kuai Liang, took on the mantle of Sub-Zero.
- Johnny Cage - is a Hollywood actor who is skilled in combat. His signature move is a knee punch to the opponent's groin.
- Raiden - is the God of Thunder and becomes even stronger as an Elder God. He is one of the original seven characters from the first Mortal Kombat game.
- Goro - is a character from the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. He is a prince of Shokan and a former champion of the Mortal Kombat tournament. He is one of the most recognizable and memorable characters in the series. He is often a recurring antagonist in the series and the main ally of the sorcerer Shang Tsung. Goro debuted as one of the few original characters in the first Mortal Kombat game, serving as a sub-boss for Shang Tsung.
- Kano - debuting in the original 1992 game, he is the leader of the Black Dragon, a fictional criminal organization. Kano is distinguished by his cybernetic eye, which he uses as a laser weapon in later installments. As one of the returning villains in the series, he often allies with forces threatening Earth.
- Shang Tsung - is a powerful sorcerer who can change his shape and consume the souls of defeated warriors. Shang Tsung is usually depicted as the right-hand man of the Outworld emperor, Shao Kahn, and the archenemy of the Shaolin monk, Liu Kang.
Controversy Surrounding the SNES Version
The game was controversial due to its brutality and graphic depiction of violence. The SNES version was censored to reduce the level of violence, which caused dissatisfaction among many fans of the game. Nevertheless, Mortal Kombat became one of the most popular fighting titles and initiated the entire game series.
