Pocky & Rocky online (FastROM)
Game Description
Pocky & Rocky is an action game released for the SNES console in 1992. Developed by Natsume, the game gained popularity due to its unique blend of shooter, adventure, and graphical style, as well as the charm of its main characters, Pocky and Rocky. It is a continuation of the 1986 arcade game KiKi KaiKai created by Taito.
Storyline
The game follows the adventures of a young Shinto priestess, Pocky, and her new companion, a tanuki named Rocky, as they try to save a group of goblins from evil forces.
Gameplay
Pocky & Rocky is a scrolling shooter game that takes place from a top-down perspective. The screen can scroll both horizontally and vertically, and player-controlled characters can move in eight directions. The game features six levels and allows players to continue without restrictions.
In single-player mode, the player can choose to play as either Pocky or Rocky. In cooperative mode for two players, both characters are on the screen at the same time.
Pocky can use her ofudas to strike enemies from a distance, or wave her gohei to harm enemies up close. Similarly, Rocky can throw leaves across the screen or quickly turn around and swing his tail. Both characters can slide on the ground to quickly cover the area. If a player hits the other player while sliding in the two-player game, it will cause the second player to spin around the screen, damaging any enemies they come into contact with.
Various power-ups can enhance the effectiveness of Pocky or Rocky's attacks, such as enlarging their projectiles or giving them the ability to throw multiple at once. Others include a shield that absorbs enemy attacks, and an upgrade that replenishes life points, giving Pocky and Rocky greater resilience.
Later Series Fate
The game Pocky & Rocky was generally well received by critics and received a sequel in the form of Pocky & Rocky 2 (1994) on SNES and Pocky & Rocky with Becky (2001) on GBA. A new installment, Pocky & Rocky Reshrined (PC, Switch, PS4), released in 2022, was very well received.
Pocky & Rocky FastROM
The Pocky & Rocky game in the FastROM version runs much smoother, allowing you to experience it with even greater enjoyment.
FastROM is a technology used in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) console that allows for faster reading of data and operational codes from ROM memory. In the case of SNES games, FastROM allows for reading data and operational codes from ROM 33.58% faster compared to SlowROM. Depending on the game, FastROM can make the game run about 10%-33% faster compared to the original SlowROM version.
However, it is worth noting that not all components of the SNES system use FastROM. For example, other components such as WRAM (2.68 MHz), PPU (3.58 MHz), DMA (2.68 MHz), and SRAM (2.68 MHz) operate at the same speed.
FastROM is often used to optimize SNES games that were originally designed to run in SlowROM mode. This allows games to run smoother, with fewer delays, improving the overall gaming experience.
